How do I do it with a family of 6 and not go broke or crazy?
Nope, I am not a magician I swear! But over the course of the last 19 years (since I became a mom) I have worked through several different types of meal planning. Everything from daily to monthly shopping. But I still found that I was spending way too much time and money on food and meal planning. So what changed? How did I take back my time and money? Keep reading to find out what I have done and what I am doing now.
With so many meal planning options how do you choose what’s right for your family?
I was raised to go to a big box store once a month, buy meat and freeze it. I would buy enough meat for 30-ish meals and deep freeze them. It was as much work as it sounds like. I would then break out the calendar (I used this one all last year) and plan meals for the month based on what I bought. The problem was I found myself in the store every few days buying things anyway. We wasted a lot of money that way. And that is how I shopped for a very long time. Seriously up until about 6 months ago, Then I told my husband I didn’t want to do that anymore. so we moved on to weekly grocery trips.
Weekly trips were slightly better, slightly cheaper and usually easier to plan & keep up with. We, for the most part, were good with this setup. However, as my business started picking up and my oldest started college I found myself struggling to keep up with full-blown shopping trips weekly. So, I ended up at the store daily/every other day what an expensive nightmare. I was spending $50 MINIMUM every time I walked into the store. Hello, expensive!
What am I doing differently now?
As you can imagine the daily thing didn’t last long, lol. Back in November, I was scrolling through Facebook and Hello Fresh popped up in my feed. My husband and I sat down did the math and realized it was cheaper to let them do my shopping for me so to speak. So, we decided to try it during their Black Friday sale. Worth It! I now got to the store for basics and breakfast stuff once a week. So much easier and cheaper! The food is good and we get to try new things almost weekly! Without me putting a ton of time into planning my meals.
So, here’s how it works: I signed up on the website. (disclaimer, you can not see the meals until you sign up. However, here is a link to the recipes available to choose from) My husband and I pick our meals for the week. We get 6 meals weekly. (We take time every 3 weeks, about 15-20 minutes, and choose meals for the following month). Pick a delivery day and wait for my food to arrive at my door. Just that simple. So a process that took hours a week or time daily to figure out now takes minutes for the month!
